Personal History[]
Marcus was born to Ted and Marcia (Winter) Moreland on July 1, 1955, in Tupelo, MS. He grew up on a farm just outside of Tupelo. Suffering from asthma as a teen, Marcus was never able to participate in sports. Although he was built like an athlete, his respitory problems rendered him as a sideline observer only.
This changed when he met Andrew Adams. Andrew introduced Marcus to his father Arnold and said that he would possibly make a great referee since he couldn't be more actively involved. He was given a tryout in May 1978. After Thomas Jackson's suspension, Marcus was added to the rotation more often in August of that year. When Jackson's suspension was lifted, Marcus went to refereeing primarily in Tupelo until his tragic death from an asthma attack on the morning of November 3, 1985, while walking to the cattle barn on his farm. The MVW offered moments of silence for Marcus at each of their cards the following week.
